SAFETY BREAK-AWAY COUPLING
Investigation of drive-away incidents involving LP Gas Loading/Unloading
arm assemblies has led AE to develop protective break-away couplings
that, if separated, quickly form an air-tight pressure seal that prevents
LP gas from loading arms or tank trucks from escaping through the
separated coupling half and spilling to the ground. Subsequent R&D
efforts have resulted in the manufacture of `ASSEN' Safety Break-Away
Couplings (SBAC) utilizing shear-pins that are:
Available in 50mm (2") to 85mm (4"), and larger
sizes
ANSI Class 300 and Class 150
Available in Stainless Steel, Carbon Steel and Aluminum
Available with seals of Buna-N, Viton®, and Teflon®
Flange-ends, Threaded-ends and combinations
Simply constructed for ease of reassembly after separation
without special tools

SPECIFIC USE OF FLAME ARRESTERS FOR
LP LOADERS
Investigation of fire and damage incidents involving LP Gas Loading/Unloading
arm assemblies has led AE to develop a protective Flame Arrestor for
LP Loaders that prevents the spreading of fire. Subsequent R&D
efforts have resulted in the specific use of flame arresters in the
LP Loaders.
FIRE TESTS OF ON-LINE LEAK REPAIR CLAMPS
(BOLTABLE WELDABLE HIGH PRESSURE SPLIT SLEEVES)
The need to determine the capability of on-line leak repair clamps
(boltable, weldable high pressure split sleeves) to withstand continued
exposure to fire and extreme temperatures led Associate Engineers
to research and develop fire testing environments, and to perform
fire tests on various size on-line leak repair clamps. As a result,
Associate Engineers has developed Fire Test procedures in accordance
with API specification 6FB addressing fire tests for end connections.
The on-line leak repair clamp is connected to a controlled and monitored
test apparatus and, during the tests, is directly exposed to flames
with temperatures between 1400 and 1800 degrees F.

TRIPLE SEAL DESIGN SWIVEL JOINTS FOR
FLOATING SUCTION, SKIMMERS, AND ROOF DRAIN APPLICATIONS
Based on information received from users in the field, and working
knowledge obtained from field engineers for more than 25 years, various
data has been obtained as to the "average" number of swivel
joint cycles per day and the working loads on the swivel joints under
various conditions, especially the external pressure in storage tanks.
This data has allowed parameters to be established for designing a
third seal, an external lip seal, for special swivel joint applications.
The development of submerged
applications such as a floating suction assembly for aviation fuels
and for a roof drain assembly require additional seal protection for
the swivel joint used in these assemblies. Research into these applications
has led to the development of a triple seal swivel joint - adding
a third seal (an external lip seal) to prevent contaminants, or the
product being pumped, from entering the lubricated bearing area of
the swivel joint. A triple seal swivel joint is completely sealed
for submerged operation.

LOCKING SYSTEMS
FOR TOP AND BOTTOM LOADING ARMS
Investigation of back pressure flashing
incidents while top loading led AE to develop a simple primary and/or
secondary arm positive locking system for top loading arms that prevents
potential flashing incidence that could cause personal injury, equipment
damage and subsequent product loss.
AE has also developed
a positive locking system for top and bottom loading/unloading arms
that prevents undesirable and random movements of the loading arms,
unless the arms are enabled for the desired position/operation. This
type of locking system is also referred to as a base swivel joint
locking system.
